Mosquitoes are bloodsuckers, so they look for prey. Often, they’re attracted to you because of scented soap, skin odor, and warm body temperature. You must work hard on keeping them away from your home because they cause unsightly, itchy bites that carry deadly diseases like malaria, West Nile, dengue, and Zika virus.

Apart from chemical fumigation, you can also use natural mosquito repellents. They may not kill these pesky bugs, but they drive them away, lessening the chances of you becoming their dinner. Here are some healthier natural remedies that can help keep mosquitoes away from you and your home.

Plant Certain Flora

When you’re working on effective mosquito control, your first line of defense is your yard and entryways. It would be helpful to plant foliage that naturally drives away mosquitoes because of their scent. Their intrinsic fragrance irritates mosquitoes and keeps these flying nuisances off your property. You can try planting the following:

  • Neem trees in the yard

  • Lavender bushes

  • Citronella grass in large planters

  • Catnip in garden

  • Marigolds, geraniums, and alliums in pots

  • Herbs like basil, mint, and rosemary in a window box

All of these plants offer natural protection against mosquitoes because they emit strong scents that mosquitoes dislike. If you live in a temperate climate, you can bring the potted non-perennial plants inside during wintertime.

Burn Sage in The Yard

If you love gathering in your garden, pest control experts say you should also have a sage plant nearby. Though it may not ward off mosquitoes by being there, the leaves can be thrown into a fire pit. After, it will emit a strong earthy scent that will cast away these bugs. You can also try drying the leaves and grinding them. Then, mix the powder with water to make a homemade spray you can directly apply to your skin.

Make a Cinnamon Mixture

This spice doesn’t just work as an excellent accompaniment to apple strudel, pumpkin pie, or oatmeal. The strong scent of this wonderful spice wards off mosquitoes. You can try sprinkling the powder in entryways during mosquito season. Furthermore, try making a solution for your skin, around your property, in your entryways, and in other areas. To make the solution, you need to mix 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon essential oil with 4 ounces of water.

Light Up Scented Candles or Incense Sticks

Are you holding a party in your backyard? If you want to keep the mosquitoes away, be more vigilant by lighting up scented candles or incense sticks all around the area. Be sure to pick the citronella, lavender, or neem scent, as these prove to be the most potent against mosquitoes. Just make sure to keep the lit stuff away from highly flammable things. When done right, candles and incense sticks will ward off mosquitoes and set the ambiance to boot.

If you’ve done everything you can to repel mosquitoes naturally, but they keep on coming back, it could mean that you have a lot of mosquito eggs on your property. The only way you can be free from these pesky, disease-bearing bugs is through professional fumigation. Talk to a pest control specialist to find out if this is the best solution for you.
